Step 1
Moderate

pH Nutrient Lockout

Symptoms

Multiple deficiency symptoms appearing at once, even though the nutrient solution has adequate strength. Yellowing, brown spots, stunted growth, and pale leaves can all appear together. The specific symptoms depend on which nutrients are locked out.

Cause

The pH of the nutrient solution is outside the optimal 5.5-6.5 range, preventing the plant from absorbing certain nutrients even though they are present. Below 5.0, calcium and magnesium are locked out. Above 7.0, iron, manganese, and other micronutrients are unavailable.

How to Fix
  1. Test the pH of your nutrient solution immediately
  2. Adjust pH to 5.8-6.2 using pH Up or pH Down solution
  3. If pH is severely off, drain and replace the nutrient solution entirely
  4. Recheck pH after 24 hours, as it can drift
Prevention

Test pH daily if possible, or at minimum every 2-3 days. Invest in a reliable pH meter or test kit. Calibrate your pH meter regularly.

Prevention Tips

  • Check pH every 1-2 days. Keep it between 5.5 and 6.5.
  • Change nutrient solution completely every 1-2 weeks.
  • Keep nutrient solution temperature between 65-72F (18-22C).
  • Use adequate aeration. Size your air pump to at least 1 watt per gallon.
  • Maintain good airflow around plants with fans.
  • Clean and sanitize your system between crops.
  • Inspect plants daily for early signs of problems.
  • Top off with plain, pH-adjusted water between solution changes.
